Negotiators from Qatar have traveled to Iran to meet with Iranian officials in a new effort to reduce tensions and create conditions for dialogue between the United States and Iran to resume as soon as possible, a diplomat familiar with the visit told CNN.
The Qatari delegation's trip was coordinated directly with the United States, according to the same source. Qatar, as the main mediator in previous negotiations, is playing an active role in preventing a further escalation of the conflict.
Friday marked a relative lull in the fighting, after days of intense attacks that threatened to completely dismantle the US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding signed in mid-June. International mediators, including Qatar and Pakistan, are working intensively to bring both sides back to the negotiating table.
A US official told CNN earlier that the US military is carrying out deliberate strikes but is taking deliberate pauses to avoid a full-scale escalation and give space to diplomacy.
"The goal is to maintain pressure, but without closing the door to dialogue ," the American official said.
The visit of negotiators from Qatar comes after recent statements by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who stressed that any final agreement must reflect the interests of all affected parties, including Iran's neighbors and countries suffering from the global economic fallout.
Pakistan, which along with Qatar was the main mediator in the Swiss rounds, has made repeated calls for restraint and respect for the commitments of the Islamabad Memorandum.
