Among other things, the French President gave the Pope a book that shows the restoration process of Notre Dame Cathedral after the 2019 fire...
Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron met with Pope Leo XIV on Good Friday at the Vatican, presenting him with a series of symbolic gifts related to the history, culture and values of France.
According to information from the Elysee Palace, the presidential couple first presented the Pope with a French national basketball team jersey, signed by international athletes. The Pope, born in Chicago, is known for his interest in sports and especially his hometown basketball team.
The gifts also include a framed relic of a map by French missionary Jacques Marquette, who participated in 1673 with Louis Jolliet in the exploration of the Mississippi River.

The map, which is held in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, describes the early stages of French exploration in North America and includes geographical observations as well as references to indigenous populations encountered by the explorers. This document contributed to the spread of scientific and missionary knowledge in Europe and is symbolically linked to the action of Pope Leo XIV in Peru during the period 1985–1998.
Macron also offered the collection of texts “Combat pour la liberté” by Georges Bernanos, written during World War II. In them, he strongly defends freedom against all forms of oppression, especially totalitarianism.

Recently, the Pope was presented with the book “Rebâtir Notre-Dame de Paris” by Mathieu Lour, which documents the restoration process of Notre-Dame Cathedral after the 2019 fire. The work includes rich photographic material, drawings, and testimonies of craftsmen, architects, and engineers who participated in the restoration of the historic monument.
