Loyalists begin closing ranks, hoping the system will hold. They must protect, react and discourage the indecisive. The Wagnerites caught the Russian army by surprise. In footage released in recent hours, Prigozhin was seen facing generals, including one more important than the others: Vladimir Alekseev, the army's number two.
