The American intelligence service seems to have failed somewhat regarding what happened in Russia today.
United States intelligence officials believed Wagner's boss was planning a coup against Russia's military leadership, but it was unclear when it would happen.
Intelligence officials briefed congressional leaders known as the Gang of Eight earlier this week about Wagner's movements and deployment of equipment near Russia.
They noted that Prigozhin was preparing for such a move, including stockpiling massive weapons and ammunition, a Western intelligence official and another person familiar with the intelligence said.
The official said they believed Prigozhin's claims of a lack of ammunition for operations in Ukraine were deliberate deception. He was using them as a pretext to launch an uprising against the Russian elite.
One of the sources said that while US intelligence believed it was only a matter of time before Prigozhin made a dramatic move against the Russian military leadership, there was "uncertainty" as to when that might happen. The other source said that "everything happened very quickly" and it was difficult to tell how serious Prigozhin was about threatening the Russian military and where he was going to take his troops.
As CNN previously reported, US officials were caught off guard by the speed with which the situation unfolded on Friday night and escalated on Saturday, prompting top officials to cancel planned international travel and call emergency meetings across the government.
