When asked about his campaign promise for mass deportations of immigrants, Trump said his administration has no choice but to implement them.
President-elect Donald Trump stated today in an interview with 'NBC News' that one of his first priorities upon taking office in January would be to make the border stronger.
When asked about his campaign promise for mass deportations of immigrants, Trump said his administration has no choice but to implement them.
Trump said he considers his landslide victory over Vice President Kamala Harris a mandate to get things right.
" We obviously have to make the border strong and robust and we have to -- at the same time, we want people to come to our country. And you know, I'm not somebody who says, 'No, you can't come in .'" We want people to come in," Trump said.
As a candidate, Trump had repeatedly vowed to carry out the largest deportation effort in American history. Asked about the cost of his plan, he emphasized that it is not a financial cost problem.
" It's not a matter of price. It's not — really, we have no other choice. When people have killed and killed, when drug lords have destroyed countries, and now they're going back to those countries because they won't stay here " , he said.
In Thursday's phone interview with NBC News, he credited his message on immigration in part as the reason he won the race.
" They want to have borders and they like the people who come, but they have to enter with love for the country. They have to enter legally ," he said.
Trump also pointed to the diverse coalition of voters he attracted, noting the gains he made among Latino voters, young voters, women and Asian American voters from 2020.
" I started to see that the realignment could happen because the Democrats are not in line with the thinking of the country. You can't have the defunding of the police, things like that. They don't want to quit and they don't work, and people understand that . " said Trump.
Trump also talked about his calls with Harris and President Joe Biden after the election results, which he described as very respectful.
" Very nice calls, very respectful on both sides. Harris talked about the transition and she said she would like it to be as smooth as possible, which I agree with, of course ," he said.
Trump also said he and Biden on the phone agreed to have lunch together very soon. He further added that he has spoken with over 70 world leaders since Wednesday morning, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which the president-elect described as a very good conversation.
Trump also said he spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, but did not reveal details about that conversation. He added that he had not yet spoken to Russian President Vladimir Putin, but said: " I think we will ."
