US President Donald Trump says it would be "very bad for the future of NATO" if allies do not help secure the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil transport.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Trump says he expects China to help unblock the strait and may delay a summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping if it does not do so.
Aboard Air Force One, during his overnight flight to Washington, the US president said he had spoken to "about seven" countries about "policing" the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump mentioned China as one of those nations, noting that it depends heavily on oil shipments traveling through the waterway.
Although he did not mention any other countries he had contacted, he referred to the NATO alliance, as well as other countries that he believes should "defend their territory."
Previously, he told the Financial Times that it is only "appropriate" for nations that benefit from the Strait of Hormuz to help reopen it.
Trump warned that if there were no response from other nations, it could be "very bad for the future of NATO," adding that the US has been "very kind" to its European allies.
"We didn't need to help Ukraine. Ukraine is thousands of miles away from us... But we helped them. Now we'll see if they're going to help us. Because I've said for a long time that we'll be there for them, but they're not going to be there for us. And I'm not sure if they'll be there," Trump said.
Trump's comments come just a day after he called on China, France, Japan, South Korea and the United Kingdom to join in a "team effort" to open the Strait.
