Germany will not participate in an international military operation to protect merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said.
In an interview with public broadcaster ARD, Wadephul was asked whether Berlin could become an active part of the conflict in the region. “ Will we soon become an active part of this conflict? No ,” he replied.
His statement comes on the eve of the European Union Council of Foreign Ministers, where the possibility of expanding the European Aspides mission in the Strait of Hormuz is expected to be discussed.
According to Wadephul, security in this strategic corridor, one of the main routes for global oil transportation, can only be achieved through a negotiated solution and dialogue with Iran.
He stressed that the German government has a clear position, supported by Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, that Berlin does not intend to be involved in the conflict.
The German foreign minister also added that the United States and Israel have stated that the aim of their operations is to destroy Iran's military capabilities, especially its nuclear and missile programs.
" We look forward to being informed and keeping in touch about developments, and to being involved when the time comes to start negotiations ," he said, adding that Germany would like to participate in the diplomatic process.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has suggested that several countries send military forces to ensure the safety of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, which is vital for global energy supplies and has been threatened by Iranian authorities with attacks on ships bound for Western countries.
