Nicolas Sarkozy has spoken for the first time since regaining his freedom, expressing gratitude for the support he has received during his sentence and stressing his determination to prove his innocence. The former French president, who was released at noon today after several months under house arrest, published a message on the X platform in which he said he is preparing for the appeal phase of the court decision that convicted him of corruption and influence peddling.
“ As I regain my freedom and reunite with my family, I want to express my deepest gratitude to all those who wrote to me, supported me and defended me ,” Sarkozy wrote. “ Your thousands of messages touched me deeply and gave me the strength to face this ordeal. The law was applied. Now I will prepare for the appeal. All my energy is focused on proving my innocence. The truth will prevail. Life teaches us that the true story is written to the end ,” he added.
Sarkozy, who led France from 2007 to 2012, was convicted of trying to influence a judge and obtaining prohibited information related to financial investigations into him. He has always denied any wrongdoing, calling the trial political and motivated by his enemies within the judiciary.
His release has sparked mixed reactions in France. Supporters see it as a step towards restoring the dignity of a former president who, they say, was treated unfairly. Critics, on the other hand, point out that the decision to release him constitutes a sensitive test of the credibility of French justice, especially in cases involving high-ranking political figures.
Now, Sarkozy is preparing for his next battle in the appeals court, where he will seek the full annulment of the conviction and the rehabilitation of his name. For now, he has returned to family life in Paris, while a political atmosphere is being created around him that could help revive his influence within the French right.
