As the nation celebrates its 249th birthday, it’s hard not to wonder about the future of the American experiment. Two and a half centuries ago, a group of scattered colonies overcame regional differences to create a nation. Of course, slavery, the most divisive issue of the time, was their struggle. And the powerful rhetoric of freedom and independence was used to the advantage of wealthy male landowners. Yet despite their differences, they came together under a banner of ideals for a common cause.
These days, the people at the top don't seem eager to strengthen our community. President Trump and his MAGA cult are driven more by hostility and "let's crush the liberals" vindictiveness than by a desire to strengthen the bonds between the diverse citizens of this great nation.
In a highly symbolic act that didn't get enough attention, Trump refused to attend the funeral of former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, who were killed by a Trump supporter who opposed abortion rights and gay rights. On the day of that memorial service, Trump played golf with Republican leaders and posted on social media: "why are the Democrats always against America???" Meanwhile, Vice President JD Vance spends much of his time mocking progressives and Democrats on social media.
This couple shows absolutely no interest in filling gaps, healing wounds, much less serving as a model of decency.
In every case, they choose insults over discourse and debate. They seek to divide and rule, and they define their policies by identifying and attacking enemies. In a conversation I had with Barack Obama when he was president, he emphasized: "I am the president of all Americans, including those who did not vote for me. I have to consider what is best for them, even for those who do not like me."
This is not the way Trump and Vance see it.
Trump doesn’t care about the public interest, only his own. That’s how we ended up with the terrible legislation passed by Congressional Republicans this week. As we’ve heard time and again, he gives to the rich (by giving them huge tax breaks) and takes from the poor (by stripping millions of Americans of health care coverage and cutting food assistance for children).
Even Republicans who initially opposed these draconian provisions, including those who represent large numbers of Medicaid beneficiaries as well as other constituents who would be severely harmed by this legislation, allowed themselves to be bullied by Trump and his MAGA aides into voting for it.
The measure is estimated to expand the deficit by about $3.3 trillion over 10 years (and possibly more). It would pour $100 billion into ICE and border enforcement, bolstering the burgeoning police state that the Trump administration is creating to deport law-abiding, hard-working residents. (For comparison, the FBI’s annual budget is $11.4 billion.)

In addition to its mind-boggling cruelty, this bill presents an absurd internal logic. Trump claimed that undocumented immigrants should be rounded up for the sake of American prosperity. However, to pay for this operation, he and his Republican minions would reduce the after-tax incomes of some Americans in the bottom 20 percent, strip health insurance from millions, and create fiscal instability. Moreover, deporting millions of immigrants would likely cause a labor shortage that would drive up prices. The message to many Americans is this: we will ask you for money to deport people who work in jobs you don’t want.
In a widely shared social media post, Vance declared that the bill's cuts to Medicaid and food assistance were "insignificant compared to the ICE money and immigration enforcement provisions." As if prosecuting immigrants would make up for the human suffering this bill would bring. Try telling that to a parent whose child is starving, or an adult child whose parent loses custody due to dementia. Or a low-income family that will have to survive on a few hundred dollars less a year.
