There is no calm, the Turkish-Libyan memorandum alarms Egypt; Trump's

Egypt has asked the United States to intervene to prevent Libya's eastern parliament from ratifying the Turkish-Libyan memorandum, regional officials told Middle East Eye (MEE).

An Egyptian official told Middle East Eye that Cairo is concerned that if Libya's eastern parliament ratifies the memorandum, which was initially signed by Libya's rival Western government in 2019, it could cause tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean, at a time when Egypt is dealing with the fallout from wars in Gaza and Sudan.

An Egyptian official and another regional official told MEE that Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty raised the issue in a phone call with Massad Boulos, the US senior adviser for Africa, last month.

As reported, the US official said he would call Khalifa Haftar, the de facto ruler of eastern Libya, to discuss the issue.

Several Libyan media outlets reported that Libya's eastern parliament could ratify the 2019 memorandum in the coming weeks.

Libya's eastern parliament, based in Tobruk, is de facto controlled by Haftar, who has been supported at various times since 2011 by various regional actors, including the United Arab Emirates, the US, Egypt, France and Russia.

Trump's envoy, Massad Boulos, will visit Libya amid rising tensions, according to sources on the same website.

The 81-year-old marshal wields considerable power in eastern Libya and in mid-2019 launched a failed attempt to overthrow the country's UN-recognized government in Tripoli.

Meanwhile, sources told MEE that Cairo is wary of a change in the status quo in the maritime dispute.
