Hungary's prime minister, Viktor Orban, said on Thursday that he is proud to communicate with Moscow, although something like this angers the leaders of the European Union.
He met with Russian President Vladimir Putin last month.
" We have opened all lines of communication with the Russians. Otherwise, there will be no chance for peace. This is strategy, and we are proud of this ," Orban told reporters before the meeting of European Union leaders in Brussels.
Orban has said that Hungary is the only one that speaks "in the name and for the good of peace, which will be in the interest of everyone in Europe".
Orban, who has ties to Moscow, shook hands with Putin during a meeting in Beijing on Oct. 17 to discuss energy cooperation. Such a meeting of Putin with a European leader has rarely happened since the war launched by Russia in Ukraine in February 2022. The Hungarian leader has spoken openly against Western sanctions against Moscow in response to the start of the war.
This meeting has raised concerns among NATO partners in Budapest. The ambassadors of NATO member countries met in the Hungarian capital last week, and discussed the concern they have related to the deepening of ties between Hungary and Russia.
The war in Ukraine started on February 24, 2022. Russian President Vladimir Putin calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine. The West has responded to Russia, hitting the economy of this country with harsh sanctions. As a result of the war, thousands of people have died and millions more have been displaced from their homes./ REL
