The international organization for human rights, Human Rights Watch (HRW) has called on Mongolia to deny entry to, or arrest, the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, who intends to visit this country on September 3.
Putin is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC), which Mongolia joined in 2003.
The ICC, a permanent war crimes tribunal based in The Hague, in 2023 issued an arrest warrant for Putin for allegedly deporting children from Ukraine, which is considered a war crime.
"Mongolia will be flouting its international obligations as a member of the ICC if it allows [Putin's] visit without arresting him," Maria Elena Vignoli, senior international lawyer at HRW, said on Monday.
The Kremlin said on August 30 that it is not "worried" about Putin's trip, adding that Russia has "wonderful dialogue with our friends from Mongolia"./ REL
