Pope Leo XIV has sent a letter to Volodymyr Zelensky on Ukraine's Independence Day, writing that he prays for the people suffering because of the war and for those who have lost loved ones.
"With a heart wounded by the violence that is destroying your land, I address you on this day of your national holiday. I want to assure you of my prayers for the people of Ukraine who are suffering because of the war, especially for all those who have been physically wounded, for those who mourn the loss of a loved one and for those who have been deprived of their homes," the Pope said.
The Pope then appeals to pave the way for dialogue and peace. He calls for the weapons to be laid down and for the lives of innocent people not to be taken.
"May God himself comfort them; may he strengthen the wounded and grant eternal rest to the departed. I pray to God to touch the hearts of people of good will to silence the cry of arms and to open the way to dialogue, paving the way to peace for the good of all," the Pope concluded.
