President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukraine and the United States have held the first round of talks aimed at drafting a document on Ukraine's reconstruction and economic recovery after the war.
The US was represented by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Larry Fink, CEO of BlackRock, and Jared Kushner, Donald Trump's son-in-law.
"There are many developments that, with the right approach, can work in Ukraine ," said Zelensky, who called the discussions productive.
He adds that Ukraine aims to advance recovery work in parallel with security discussions, arguing that long-term economic stability depends on a credible post-war settlement.
Among other things, during the evening speech, Zelensky said that he discussed the possibility of holding elections with the Ukrainian parliament, following Donald Trump's comments. He added that the elections could be held within a period of 60-90 days if allies guarantee their security.
"Holding elections under a state of emergency is not easy, and pressure on this issue is not what we need ," Zelensky said.
Speaking about the peace plan, the Ukrainian president said that the 20-point plan that forms Ukraine's revised peace proposal constitutes a "fundamental document." He further added that his country is also drafting two additional documents: the first on US security guarantees and the second on the economy and reconstruction.
Meanwhile, across the ocean, Donald Trump spoke about the peace process in Ukraine during a roundtable discussion with business leaders. The US president said he exchanged "very strong words" with European leaders during a phone call about Ukraine today. He later confirmed that Volodymyr Zelensky has requested a meeting between Trump and Ukraine's European allies to take place this weekend in Europe.
"I think we had some disagreements about people and we'll see how it turns out. We said, before we go to a meeting, we want to know a few things. They would like us to go to a meeting over the weekend in Europe and we'll make a decision based on what they bring. We don't want to waste our time. The Ukrainian people want a solution ," Trump said.
Asked further about what Zelensky wants from a potential meeting, Trump changed the subject and began talking about the need for parliamentary elections in Ukraine.
"I wonder how long it will be until they have an election. It's been a long time, they haven't had an election for a long time," said Trump, who capped his speech by saying that the Ukrainian people want this to end./ Pamphlet
