At least 62 people have so far been confirmed dead, more than 300 have been injured, and many more are feared to be trapped under the rubble, from the powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake that struck Japan on the first day of 2024.
Meanwhile, satellite images show the apocalyptic destruction that entire areas have suffered from the powerful earthquake. Many buildings have been flattened, while deep cracks are also observed that exceed hundreds of meters in length. The Noto peninsula was hit hardest by the latest earthquake, where many buildings were flattened, while others were engulfed in flames.
Currently, rescue groups are racing against time to come to the aid of people suspected to be trapped under the rubble. The authorities have called on the population to stay away from the houses located in these areas due to the risk of further earthquakes.
People evacuated from their homes gathered in auditoriums, schools and community centers. According to Japanese media reports, tens of thousands of homes were destroyed. Water, electricity and telephone service are still out in some areas.
The 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck on Monday afternoon, forcing residents near the coast to move to higher ground as tsunami waves hit the west coast, submerging homes and vehicles.
