US President Donald Trump has reacted to the news of the passing of Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, whom he described as a "true American patriot."
Graham passed away at the age of 71 after an acute and sudden illness. The news was announced by his office, while the family has requested privacy during this difficult time.
In a social media post, Trump praised the Republican senator and his contribution to American politics, calling him a "true American patriot."
Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina senator since 2002, was one of the most influential voices in Washington on foreign policy and a key Trump ally.
Shortly before his death, Graham had returned from Kiev, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday. It was not known before the trip that he had health problems.
Graham was a strong supporter of US aid to Ukraine and during his recent visit to Kiev was working on a bill on sanctions against Russia, which he said would give President Trump "the tools to end this war."
During his political career, Graham held important positions in the Senate, including chairing the Budget Committee. He also became known for his strong positions on Russia and American foreign policy.
His relationship with Donald Trump has also been fraught with tension. After the Capitol riots in 2021, Graham criticized the actions of Trump supporters, but later became one of his staunchest supporters and supported him in the 2024 election.
"Trump and I have had an incredible journey. I hate it to end like this. All I can say is kick me out. Enough," Graham said at the time.
