German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, during a joint conference with Denis Bečirović, President of the Presidency of Bosnia-Herzegovina, in Berlin said that the security and stability of the Western Balkan states cannot be taken for granted, but must be actively committed to them.
Scholz emphasized that Russia's aggression against Ukraine has shown how important cooperation is and that we must do something to ensure peace in Europe.
"This war shows that peace cannot be taken for granted. I welcome that Bosnia and Herzegovina stands in solidarity with Ukraine and has spoken out clearly against Russian aggression. I hope we can take joint steps in this direction. We know that stability in the Western Balkans is not something we can take for granted, and we must work for it. Any attempt to undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina is unacceptable to us. We support the critical role of the High Representative in supporting democracy, the rule of law and the integrity of this country. His efforts are helping to monitor the implementation of the 1995 Dayton Agreement and thereby ensure peace," said Scholz.
He further added that the admission of the countries of the Western Balkans to the EU was very late and this process should be accelerated.
"Germany is working intensively to ensure that the countries of the Western Balkans have a future in the European Union" , stressed Scholz.
Scholz also added that Germany will continue to provide a military contingent to EUFOR-ALTHEA, the multinational force to support compliance with the Dayton Agreement.
