An old Twitter post by activist Charlie Kirk has gone viral after his shooting death during a public event in Utah.
Kirk, 31, was shot dead last night while delivering a debate at Utah Valley University for his political organization Turning Point USA. The incident occurred just 20 minutes after he had begun speaking to an audience of about 3,000 people.
In amateur videos released shortly after the incident, Kirk is seen collapsing in a chair as the crowd erupts in panic. Witnesses at the scene described moments of fear and utter confusion.
“ We all just lay on the ground. We stayed like that for about 30 to 45 seconds, then people started running. No one knew what was happening, ” said Emma Pitts, a journalist at the Deseret News.
After the murder, a 2014 post by Kirk himself resurfaced online, where he wrote ironically:
" Did an AR-15 shoot me? That's what it looks like to me ," he wrote on June 23, 2014, in a post that is going viral on X, following the September 10 attacks.
Although authorities have not yet confirmed the type of weapon used, speculation points to an AR-15, a semi-automatic rifle widely used in the US, often used in mass shootings. About 25 million of these are thought to be in the hands of American civilians.
