Tony Blair will not hold a key position on Donald Trump’s “peace council” for Gaza, following reports that Arab countries had opposed the former British prime minister’s involvement. According to the Financial Times, Blair has been quietly removed from the “peace board” which Trump has said he will chair himself.

It was previously widely reported that Blair had been scouting behind the scenes for a prominent role in the interim Gaza administration, after the plan, drawn up in part by his Tony Blair Institute for Global Change (TBI) with Trump's son-in-law and informal envoy Jared Kushner, was leaked to the media.

In the wider Arab world, Blair was viewed with skepticism for his role in the disastrous US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. Blair was the only name made public for the role on the board when the US president unveiled his 20-point plan to end the war between Israel and Hamas in late September.

Blair's withdrawal comes despite claims that he had an informal meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in late November to discuss the plans, according to the Times of Israel.

A source told the Financial Times that Blair could still play a less central role.

"He may still have a role in another capacity and that seems likely. The Americans like him and the Israelis like him."
