Greek farmers' protests escalate

Greek authorities have launched a criminal case with serious charges against at least 20 farmers who participated in violent incidents recorded on Monday with police in Heraklion and Chania.

The farmers have been charged with attempted murder in collaboration, illegal possession of weapons, use of a weapon, serious bodily injury, disturbing the peace, and obstructing transportation.

Farmers suspected of playing a leading role in the incidents destroyed patrol cars and attacked police officers with stones, injuring nine people. Four people have been arrested following incidents at Heraklion and Chania airports.

In Patras, farmers tried to enter the city's port yesterday, while they are considering blocking the Rio-Antirio bridge. Also, on Monday afternoon, farmers from Karditsa blocked the office of Rural Development Minister Kostas Tsiaras by throwing straw.

Farmers from the Nikaias blockade blocked the sides of the roads for two hours yesterday afternoon, sending the message that they can tighten the cordon as long as their problems are not solved. At the same time, many blockades are opening and closing the points where they have been set up.

It is clear that farmers continue to escalate their struggle across Greece. On Wednesday, farmers from Magnesia and fishermen from the region will block the commercial port of Volos, protesting the low prices of their products. At the same time, this afternoon in Nicaea, they are meeting to determine their next steps and are preparing for a major action in Larisa.

What measures is the government discussing?

And while the process of paying "measure 23" to farmers began yesterday, according to Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Food, Ioannis Andrianos, the future and manner of the protests are expected to be decided in today's meetings at the blockades set up by farmers across the country.

Despite the fact that Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis declared himself open to dialogue and discussion of farmers' demands, but demanded that this be done with open roads, farmers and livestock keepers are erecting new blockades on national roads and intersections, as well as at customs offices, while airports and ports have taken a central place in this year's protests, such as those in Thessaloniki, the port of Volos, which is scheduled to be blocked on Wednesday, Mytilene, Crete, etc.

According to information, discussions are taking place in the government regarding the cost of agricultural production, as it is one of the main issues raised by farmers.
