US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has cancelled at the last minute his participation in a meeting with European leaders on the Russia-Ukraine war.
The so-called Berlin format meeting took place on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference with leaders of European countries, the EU, NATO and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensyy.
Rubio was expected to join the discussions, but he canceled his participation at the last minute due to scheduling conflicts.
"The secretary will not attend the Berlin Format meeting on Ukraine, given the number of meetings he has at the same time. He is dealing with the issue of Russia-Ukraine relations in many of his meetings here in Munich ," a US official said.
A European official described the situation to the Financial Times as "crazy," while another politician declared that "the meeting made no sense" without Rubio's participation.
Ahead of the Munich Security Conference, Rubio had said he might meet with Zelensky. Rubio is also scheduled to speak at the conference on Saturday and expressed hope that his message there would be "well received."
