US President Donald Trump congratulated the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia today after the two countries agreed on Saturday to stop weeks of border clashes.
“I am pleased to announce that the fierce fighting between Thailand and Cambodia will temporarily cease and they will return to live in PEACE, according to our original recently agreed upon Treaty. I want to congratulate both great leaders on their brilliance in bringing this swift and very just conclusion to fruition. It was FAST AND DECISIVE, as all such situations should be! The United States, as always, was proud to help,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Thailand and Cambodia have disputed sovereignty for more than a century at various unclear points along their border, a dispute that has occasionally erupted into fighting. In October, Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim helped broker a ceasefire, but fighting resumed in early December. It is not clear what role the United States played in the recent negotiations that led to Saturday's ceasefire.
Trump also criticized the United Nations, saying the organization has "provided very little help or assistance" in resolving global conflicts, including the war between Russia and Ukraine.
"The United Nations must start being active and involved in WORLD PEACE!" he wrote.
Later today at Mar-A-Lago, Trump will discuss a framework for a peace deal in Ukraine with President Volodymyr Zelensky. Although the UN has drafted several resolutions condemning Russia's war, Russia, as a permanent member of the Security Council, has been able to veto those resolutions.
