White House clash, NATO chief reacts: We must give Trump the credit he deserves

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who tells the BBC he has spoken twice with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky after the meeting at the White House.

He says he is "not at liberty to say what was discussed," but shares that he told Zelensky "we have to respect" what Trump has done for Ukraine so far.

Speaking to the BBC, he says Zelensky must "find a way" to restore his relationship with his US counterpart Donald Trump after the two clashed at the White House.

He adds that the Trump administration's first approval of the sale of the Javelin anti-tank missile system allowed Ukraine to "fight back."

"We really have to give Trump the credit he deserves," Rutte adds.

Rutte: Listen, I spoke for half an hour on Thursday with Donald Trump, on the phone with President Trump. We are friends. We have worked together for years. I know that he is committed to bringing Ukraine to a lasting peace. He is committed to NATO. Of course. He expects the European NATO partners in Canada to spend more and increase defense production. And he is right there.

I am absolutely convinced that the US wants to bring Ukraine to this lasting peace… But obviously what they need to get there is to make sure that we all work together on this. And it is important that President Zelenskyy finds a way to restore his relationship with the US president and with the senior US leadership team. I discussed this yesterday with Zelenskyy, also with Keir Starmer, and now they are going to meet later today, Zelenskyy and Starmer, and tomorrow there will be an important meeting in your beautiful capital.

When the peace agreement is reached, it is important, and I think it will come out tomorrow, that many European countries are willing to help make sure that security guarantees are in place in Ukraine, to make sure that that peace agreement is sustainable and will no longer be challenged by the Russians.
