Putin has ignored a well-known rule: Don't start a war you can't win!
According to US intelligence, the Kremlin is having difficulty explaining to the Russian public the huge losses and costs of the war in Ukraine. For this reason, it appears to be trying to prolong the conflict, as any peace negotiations pose a political risk to President Vladimir Putin.
Economist Anders Aslund notes that Russia no longer aims for complete victory; on the contrary, a long war brings it benefits. If the war ends, some two million veterans, including convicts and conscripts who were promised release, will return home and ask: “What did we fight for?”
The Kremlin does not have a convincing answer.
Historian Mark Galeotti adds that Putin is caught between fear and uncertainty, and the peace positions proposed by former US President Donald Trump only increase the pressure on him.

The Kremlin may try to declare victory by occupying a certain Ukrainian region, but that is not enough to achieve the declared goals of the so-called “special military operation” of denazification, demilitarization, and preventing Ukraine’s membership in NATO, which are simply unachievable, and the Kremlin knows this well.
The war in Ukraine has entered its 1,366th day, while a new peace plan from the United States is circulating in international media.
According to reports, Washington has made it clear to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that Kiev must accept a 28-point agreement to end the conflict with Russia.
The plan includes sensitive requirements, such as:
-Handing over full control of Donbas to Russia;
-Freezing the current front lines in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia;
-Recognition of Crimea and Donbas as Russian territories;
- Halving the Ukrainian army and giving up long-range weapons;
-Recognition of Russian as an official language in Ukraine;
-Official status for the Russian Orthodox Church.
Ukrainian media sources emphasize that the proposal "does not serve Kiev's interests" and is not expected to be accepted in this form.
On the diplomatic scene, US President Donald Trump has stated that he addressed Vladimir Putin with the words: "Let me solve your damn war," signaling a desire to mediate quickly.
Meanwhile, fighting on the ground continues. At least 25 people, including children, have lost their lives in the latest Russian attacks on Ternopil. Britain has also signaled a possible threat, after discovering a Russian spy ship of the Yantar type near its waters.
The escalation of attacks has prompted Poland and Romania to scramble fighter jets, while Warsaw temporarily closed the airports of Rzeszow and Lublin. Meanwhile, the US has approved a new $105 million arms package for Ukraine.
Ukrainian forces report successfully using ATACMS tactical missiles on targets inside Russian territory, while Moscow claims to have shot down 65 Ukrainian drones overnight and reports a strike on a refinery in the Ryazan region.
According to RBC Ukraine sources, the US-Russia draft agreement remains unacceptable to Kiev, as it requires recognition of occupied territories and imposes restrictions that would prevent Ukraine from striking Russian targets.
