After four months without medicines, WHO sends first medical aid package to Gaza

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced yesterday that it has successfully delivered its first medical aid shipment to the Gaza Strip since 2 March 2025, following a severe blockade imposed by Israel. The shipment, consisting of nine trucks carrying essential medical supplies, including 2,000 units of blood and 1,500 units of plasma, entered Gaza through the Kerem Shalom border crossing in southern Israel.

However, WHO officials stressed that this aid is only "a drop in the ocean" in the face of the enormous humanitarian and health needs of the Gaza population.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the trucks arrived without any incidents of looting, despite high-risk conditions along the route. This marks a significant achievement, given previous reports of attacks on aid trucks and difficulties in distribution due to chaos and violence in Gaza.

The supplies, which include essential medical equipment and medications, will be distributed in the coming days to priority hospitals, with blood and plasma already delivered to the Nasser Medical Complex cold storage facility for further distribution to hospitals facing critical shortages.

According to the WHO, four more trucks are still at Kerem Shalom, and more are on their way to Gaza. However, Tedros stressed that these supplies are far from sufficient to address the serious health crisis.

"Large-scale assistance is essential to save lives. WHO calls for the immediate, uninterrupted and sustained delivery of health assistance to Gaza through all possible channels ," he added.
