Netanyahu uses war and Trump's influence to evade justice; seeks

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly requested a two-week break in his lengthy corruption trial, which is set to resume in Jerusalem on Monday.

According to a request made by the Israeli prime minister's lawyer, Amit Hadad, as quoted in the Times of Israel, Netanyahu should devote his immediate time to "diplomatic, national and security issues" in light of regional and global developments.

These issues include "the management of the war in Gaza and the handling of the hostage situation," Hadad wrote to the Jerusalem District Court. Netanyahu is on trial on charges of fraud and breach of trust, as well as accepting bribes in the form of media coverage. He has denied any wrongdoing.

His request follows an unprecedented call by Donald Trump to drop the charges, describing the case against Netanyahu as a “witch hunt.” Netanyahu thanked Trump for his intervention today, writing that he was deeply moved by the US president’s sincere support for X.

What is Netanyahu accused of?

Netanyahu was indicted in 2019 on charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust. The trial began in 2020 and involves three criminal cases. He denies the charges and has pleaded not guilty. It should be noted that Netanyahu is also under an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes in Gaza, allegations he denies.

-Case 4000

Prosecutors allege that Netanyahu gave regulatory favors worth about $500 million to Bezeq Telecom Israel. In return, prosecutors say, he sought positive coverage of himself and his wife Sara on a news website controlled by the company's former chairman, Shaul Elovitch.

He has been charged with bribery, fraud and breach of trust in this case.

-Case 1000

Netanyahu has been charged with fraud and breach of trust over allegations that he and his wife wrongfully received almost $210,000 in gifts from Arnon Milchan, a Hollywood producer and Israeli citizen, and billionaire Australian businessman James Packer.

Prosecutors said the gifts included champagne and cigars.

-Case 2000

Netanyahu allegedly negotiated a deal with Arnon Mozes, the owner of the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, for better coverage in exchange for legislation that would slow the growth of a rival newspaper.

He has been charged with fraud and breach of trust.
