Polish President: Sending Russian nuclear weapons to Belarus changes regional

The President of Poland, Andrzej Duda, said on Tuesday that Russia is already sending nuclear weapons to the neighboring country, Belarus, and added that this action will change the security architecture of the region and the entire NATO military alliance.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Belarus President Alyaksandr Lukashenka said last month that Moscow had already sent some tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus, after announcing such a plan in March.

The United States and NATO have not confirmed this.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg condemned Moscow's rhetoric as "dangerous and reckless" but said in July that the alliance had not seen any change in Russia's nuclear posture.

Tactical nuclear weapons are used on the battlefield and are short-range weapons, and produce few results compared to the much more powerful nuclear weapons placed in long-range missile warheads. Russia said it will continue to control what it sends to Belarus.

Duda made these comments during a joint conference with the president of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who is visiting Warsaw.

"I was telling the president [Sousa] about the implementation of statements by Vladimir Putin that Russia's tactical nuclear weapons will be moved to Belarusian territory," Duda said. "Really, this process is happening, we are seeing this".

Duda did not give details, but said that in a "clear way it is changing the security architecture in our part of Europe. It is changing the security architecture in the eastern part of NATO at the same time. In fact, it is changing the situation for the entire alliance".

Lukashenka says keeping Russian nuclear weapons in his country is aimed at deterring aggression by NATO member Poland, even though Warsaw has never made such threats.

Poland is providing its neighbor Ukraine with military, humanitarian and political support in its fight against the Russian aggressor and is participating in international sanctions against Russia and Belarus. /REL
