Prigozhin was a dead man walking for two months

"A dead man walking", that's how Wagner's mercenary chief, Yevgeny Prigozhin, was described after the rebellion he undertook in Russia.

President Putin's initial reaction was harsh, calling it a betrayal and a backstab.

The fact that a deal was then hastily struck that set Prigozhin free and he appeared in Belarus, St Petersburg and this week somewhere in Africa did not mean he was safe.

"Revenge", commented the director of the CIA, William Burns, "is a dish that Putin prefers to serve cold".

None of this, of course, is proof that Prigozhin and his circle were deliberately targeted.

But given the circumstances, any claim that his death, if confirmed, was an accident will be frowned upon, the BBC reports.

Just a few days ago Yevgeny Prigozhin appeared in a video, apparently taken in Africa, so hearing that he may be the victim of a plane crash in Russia may come as a surprise.

But a former British intelligence officer has said this is not the first time he is believed to have been in the country since his failed armed rebellion in June and this type of incident was "inevitable".

The rebellion led to the exile of the leader of the Wagner Group to Belarus, with thousands of his fighters choosing to join him in the country.

"It's very curious what he's done since June 24 when this riot happened, and I think he's crossed the line," Christopher Steele told Sky News.

"I think it was almost inevitable," he added.
