The NATO summit in Ankara, which closed yesterday and focused on increasing military spending by allied countries, was also accompanied by an unusual gift from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
As previously reported, Erdogan presented the participating leaders with a revolver with each of their names engraved on it and a box of ammunition. According to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the Turkish president also attached a document exempting weapons from customs checks for export from Turkey.
Starmer, who spoke to reporters on the flight back to London, said he decided to leave the revolver in Turkey, as bringing it into the UK would be illegal.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni acted differently, bringing the weapon to Italy.
According to Italian government sources, the transport was carried out following all the prescribed procedures. The revolver was received by personnel authorized to handle weapons and, upon arrival in Italy, procedures were initiated for its registration.
The weapon was then registered at Palazzo Chigi, as is the case with all official gifts received by the Italian Prime Minister, becoming part of the inventory of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers.
Even in this case, the transport was made possible thanks to the document issued by the Turkish authorities to remove the weapon from the country.
