Alcohol problems, drunken North Korean soldiers on the Ukrainian front?

The morale of North Korean troops in the war in Ukraine is at an all-time low, according to Ukrainian military intelligence (GUR). Pyongyang's soldiers are reportedly prone to indulging in alcohol, especially on the front lines in Ukraine. Intelligence revealed that the soldiers "got drunk on New Year's Eve." According to a report by the American magazine The Week, "the fighting spirit of North Korean soldiers has fallen drastically."

Kim Jong-un's troops, deployed mainly in the Kursk region, are helping the Russian military repel the August Ukrainian offensive from Russian territory. Although this has been successful so far, North Korean units have suffered significant losses in the war in Ukraine.

Alcohol consumption among North Korean soldiers on the Ukrainian front is another problem, but Kim Jong-un is reaping the benefits of the war in Ukraine.

According to reports in the New York Times, out of a total of about 10,000 to 12,000 North Korean soldiers, over 1,000 have already been wounded or killed.

Cooperation with Russia is particularly profitable for North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un. Andrei Lankov, director of the Korea Risk Group, told the BBC that "this is a good way for North Korea to make money, it is said to get about $2,000 a month per soldier". In addition, Kim hopes to gain access to Russian weapons technology to improve his arsenal.

The fact that North Korea's soldiers seem to be increasingly turning to the bottle in the war in Ukraine could lead to further problems in the coming weeks. The Russian army itself has long had a problem with alcohol. Russian soldiers caught drunk face harsh penalties. They will be transferred to a special unit that will serve as cannon fodder on the Ukrainian front, as Reuters reported in October 2023. These so-called "Storm-Z" battalions have a very low survival rate and are feared by Russian soldiers .
