Republican Mike Johnson has been re-elected as speaker of the US House of Representatives. He secured the 218 votes he needed to hold the role from the 434 members who voted.
Republicans control the House of Representatives by a narrow majority of 219 – 215. Two Republicans who originally voted against Johnson have changed their votes.
The election of the president is one of the first acts of the new Congress, since Congress cannot perform any function without his election.
The result avoided a repeat of the start of last Congress, when a group of conservative opponents opposed Kevin McCarthy's bid for speaker, marking the first time in a century that a speaker did not win support in the first round.
Congress is expected to meet on January 6 to certify the victory of Mr. Donald Trump's presidential election. With Trump's inauguration on January 20, Republicans will have control of all three branches of government in both houses of Congress and the White House.
President-elect Trump endorsed Johnson for president, writing in a Social Truth post Friday that the congressman is a great man with great skills who will have 100% support.
