Experts have discovered a US-made nuclear superweapon. Although it is officially secret, the details have been made public.
The process as a whole was called 'Fogbank', and it was a process for producing nuclear warheads. But it was so highly classified that the details of its creation process were lost.
The material was originally produced in the southern US state of Tennessee between 1975 and 1989, but after the last batch of heads were produced, the facility was decommissioned.
Two decades later, the US military decided to refurbish its aging nuclear warheads to extend their lifespan, but it became clear that very little data about their manufacturing process had been preserved. Most of the staff who had the expertise to produce the material had either retired or left the agency.
After a costly engineering process, the US National Nuclear Security Administration finally produced it again in 2008.
Although the existence has become public knowledge, the exact nature of Fogbank still remains classified.
Weapons experts believe it is an airgel material - one of the lightest solid materials known.
They suspect it is designed to become superheated plasma - a state of matter that occurs when a gas is heated to such a high temperature that atoms collide and electrons are stripped from them.
This will happen when the nuclear fission stage is reached, which will then cause the final explosion.
Despite all this information and speculation, it is still unclear whether Fogbank is being used in new nuclear warheads today. / Adapted "Pamphlet" from "Daily Star"
