The Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, reacted with shock, after today's request by the prosecutors of Palermo to sentence the Italian Minister of Transport and the secretary of the League, Matteo Salvini, to six years in prison. Meloni has expressed her support for Matteo Salivi
The request for his sentence relates to a decision he made when he was Minister of the Interior, in August 2019, to prevent the disembarkation in Italy of 147 migrants and refugees who had been rescued by the ship of the Spanish non-governmental organization, Open Arms .
In her reaction, Meloni considered it unimaginable to punish a minister who, according to her, did the duty of protecting the country's borders.
"It is unimaginable that a minister of our sovereign republic risks being sentenced to six years in prison for performing his duty, protecting the borders of the nation, as the citizens requested with their vote," said Meloni.
Among other things, Meloni expressed solidarity for him.
"Making the obligation to protect Italy's borders against illegal immigration a crime sets a very serious precedent. I express my full solidarity with Salvini", added the Italian Prime Minister.
Matteo Salvini is accused of depriving immigrants of their freedom and of refusing to continue with the actions imposed by the state apparatus.
According to Palermo prosecutors, Salvini acted in 2019 not for a strategy agreed with the Conte government, but out of an interest in increasing his electoral consensus by promoting the fight against illegal immigration.
According to the prosecutor's office, there was no risk of terrorism on board the ship and therefore there was no need to protect the sovereignty of the state, moreover, the conditions of the immigrants because of that action worsened day by day, reports ANSA.
To justify the request for punishment, prosecutor Marzia Sebella underlined that "POS should be released without delay and immediately, the denial was in disregard of the rules and not to continue a government plan", and that "the conscious and voluntary denial violated the freedom of to each of the 147 people and there was no reason.”
