The NYT writes that the part of the building where Haniyeh is suspected to have been sheltered has suffered damage and has been covered with a green net, commonly used in construction sites.
Iran's Revolutionary Guards announced the killing of Haniyeh two days ago, but gave no details on the mechanism used by Israel. Experts believe that Israel launched a long-range missile from an area outside Iran's territory, having previously had accurate information about the room where Haniyeh was sleeping.
The rocket hit at 02:00 in the morning, killing him on the spot along with a bodyguard.

More than nine months after the outbreak of war that has reduced the Gaza Strip to rubble, Ismail Haniya has repeatedly insisted that the Israeli hostages will not be released until a permanent ceasefire is declared.

In October 2023, fourteen members of his family, including a brother and nephew, were killed in an Israeli air strike on his family home in Gaza City. In November 2023, his granddaughter was reportedly killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City, and later that month, his great grandson was also killed in an Israeli strike. On April 10, 2024, three of his sons and three grandsons were killed in an Israeli airstrike in the Gaza Strip. On June 25, 2024, ten members of his family, including his 80-year-old sister, were killed in an Israeli airstrike in the al-Shati refugee camp.
