Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed a concrete solution to the main issue that has blocked peace talks between the United States and Iran: Tehran's nuclear program.
Speaking to international journalists in St. Petersburg, Putin said control over Iran's enriched uranium should be passed to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nations' nuclear watchdog.
"Iran's uranium could be moved and put under IAEA control. There would be no problem, as I see it ," Putin said, adding that he could be wrong, but he didn't see what the problem would be.
The Russian leader recalled Russia's role in reaching the 2015 nuclear deal (JCPOA) during Barack Obama's presidency and expressed Moscow's willingness to help mediate again.
" Both the US and Iran know my proposal. I hope Russia can contribute again, as we are friendly with Iran ," he said.
Talks between Washington and Tehran have stalled over the nuclear issue. Iran refuses to give up its enriched uranium, while the Trump administration has stressed that it entered the conflict to prevent Tehran from producing nuclear weapons.
Putin's proposal aims to create an international oversight mechanism that can reassure the parties involved, while preserving Iran's right to a civilian nuclear energy program under strict supervision.
