President Vladimir Putin has said that Russia's new generation Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missiles, which are capable of carrying 10 or more nuclear warheads, will soon be deployed for combat duty.
During a speech to recent graduates of military academies, Putin emphasized the importance of Russia's "triad" of nuclear forces that can be launched from land, sea or air.
"The most important task here is the development of the nuclear triad, which is the main guarantee for Russia's military security and global stability," Putin said.
The Russian leader stated that the first Sarmat launchers would be put into combat duty "in the near future."
The liquid-fueled RS-28 Sarmat missile, nicknamed "Satan 2", was first announced by the Russian president in 2018. The 35-meter missile has a range of 18,000 km and can carry at least 10 multiple vehicles targets – each with a nuclear warhead – each of which can be directed at a different target.
The Kremlin chief can also deliver Avangard gliding hypersonic vehicles. The missiles were supposed to have been deployed last year.
