Official Beijing has hit back at US President Joe Biden's statements after he referred to his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping as a "dictator", saying the comments were absurd and a provocation.
In a statement to the media, Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning stated that China's political dignity was violated.
Biden's comments came just a day after Senior Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited Beijing to stabilize bilateral relations that China says are at an all-time low. Biden said Xi was embarrassed by the recent tensions caused by a Chinese spy balloon over US territory.
"The reason why Xi Jinping was so upset when I shot that balloon full of spy equipment in it was because he didn't know it was there. This is a huge embarrassment for dictators. When they didn't know what happened," said Biden.
This is an unexpected clash that comes shortly after efforts by both sides to reduce tensions. Meanwhile, tensions between the US and China increased after a Chinese balloon was signaled over US airspace, and tensions also increased further after tensions in Taiwan.
