Putin and Lukashenko discuss joint Russia-Belarus nuclear drill
Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko held a video conference on Thursday regarding the joint nuclear exercise that Russia and Belarus are organizing.
During his statements, Putin said that, in the face of growing global tensions and the emergence of new threats, the “nuclear triad” serves as a reliable guarantor of the sovereignty of the Russia-Belarus Union State. According to him, it ensures strategic deterrence, the preservation of nuclear parity, and the global balance of power.
The Russian president explained that one of the main objectives of the exercise is to conduct practical launches of ballistic missiles and cruise missiles. He described the use of nuclear weapons as an extraordinary measure for the security of the state.
In another part of the statement, Putin stressed that " Russia acts according to a predetermined plan and is not involved in an arms race ," adding that Moscow is advancing in the development of its nuclear forces.
The Russian Armed Forces are conducting exercises on the preparation and use of nuclear forces under the threat of aggression scenario from May 19 to 21. According to Russian authorities, the maneuvers are aimed at jointly practicing the preparation and use of nuclear weapons deployed in Belarus.
Training on the combat use of nuclear weapons and nuclear support of military units began in Belarus on May 18.
