The EU's chief diplomat, Josep Borrell, has accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of playing a "nuclear gamble" after he decided to officially lower the threshold for the use of its nuclear weapons.
Putin's move followed US President Joe Biden's decision to allow Ukraine to strike targets inside Russian territory with longer-range US-supplied missiles.
Borrell said that the EU must continue its support for Ukraine, otherwise it will be forced to pay a much higher price in the future.
"We are not part of this war, we are simply supporting Ukraine with military capabilities," Borrell declared at a conference after a meeting of the bloc's defense ministers in Brussels.
According to him, the meeting showed that there is still a "large majority" in the EU ready to continue supporting Ukraine. The war in Ukraine started on February 24, 2022.
The Russian President, Vladimir Putin, calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine, while the West has responded to Russia by hitting the country's economy with harsh sanctions.
