Putin orders largest drone strike against Kiev

One of the largest drone attacks since the start of the three-year war was launched from Russia on Sunday morning in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, killing a woman and wounding two others.

The attacks occurred just 24 hours after the two sides met in Istanbul, aiming for a ceasefire and peace talks between Ukraine and Russia.

The barrage of drone attacks was announced this morning by Ukrainian authorities.

Russia launched 273 drones by 8 a.m. (local time), mainly targeting the Kiev region, in central Ukraine, and the Dnipropetrovsk and Donetsk regions in the east, according to the Ukrainian Air Force.

Based on data provided by the Air Force, this was Russia's largest drone attack against Ukraine during the war.

On the eve of the third anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 23, Moscow launched a record number of 267 drones.

The first direct talks in three years between Russia and Ukraine, held on Friday, failed to produce the ceasefire sought by Kiev and its allies. The 100-minute talks in Istanbul resulted in an agreement to exchange prisoners of war, 1,000 from each side.

US President Donald Trump said he will speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky tomorrow, Monday.

Today's Russian drone strike killed a 28-year-old woman in the capital area and injured at least three other people, including a four-year-old child, Ukrainian authorities said.

"Unfortunately, as a result of the enemy attack in the Obukhiv district, a woman died from her wounds," Mykola Kalashnik, governor of the Kyiv region, said in a post on Telegram.

Kiev, the surrounding area and most of eastern Ukraine were on alert for air strikes for several hours. Air defense units were activated several times in an attempt to repel the attacks, the military said via Telegram.

"It was a difficult night. The Russians have always used war and attacks to intimidate all parties in negotiations," Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Ukrainian Center for Combating Disinformation, said via Telegram, referring to today's attack.

Air defense units destroyed 88 drones overnight, according to the Ukrainian Air Force.

Yesterday, a Russian drone strike killed nine civilians after hitting a minibus in the Sumy region, in northeastern Ukraine, according to Kiev.

All the wounded in the Obukhiv district, south of the city of Kiev, were taken to hospitals, Kalashnik said. He said several apartment buildings in the area were damaged.
