Pope Leo XIV: I come as a brother, I want to serve your faith and happiness

"I greet you with a heart full of gratitude. I come as a brother who wants to serve your faith and happiness." With these words, the new Pope Leo XIV addressed the thousands of faithful gathered in St. Peter's Square for his coronation ceremony.

"Let us all walk, as brothers, towards God and love one another," he emphasized.

He added that "to love" in the Gospel shows us the love that God shows us, a love without reservations or calculations.

Leo XIV emphasized that the main goal of the Catholic Church should be the achievement of peace, as well as the importance of closeness to "sister Christian Churches."

Referring to Pope Francis, he said: “In his last days we experienced an intense period. His emigration filled our hearts with sadness. We felt like sheep without a shepherd. We received his final blessing in the light of the Resurrection.”

Previously, the Gospel was read in Latin and Greek and after the service was over, the Pope received the prescribed gifts, the pallium and the ring symbolizing the beginning and end of the papacy.

At the beginning of the service, Pope Leo praised the Holy Trinity, with which every official ceremony begins. After that, he made the so-called conciliar prayer, in which he asked God the Father to bless him in this outdoor service.

Earlier, he prayed outside St. Peter's Basilica and, as he began the service, addressed the crowd of believers, saying: "Brothers and sisters, on this day that the Lord has made, we renew the memory of our baptism with the symbol of this water."

The Pope arrived in St. Peter's Square in an open-top vehicle, the famous Papmobile, where he greeted thousands of faithful, as well as leaders attending the coronation ceremony. The vehicle moved through the crowd and stopped briefly twice so the Pope could bless three babies.
