The Kremlin said on Wednesday that investigators are considering the possibility that the plane, which was carrying mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin, was deliberately brought down.
This is the first time that Russia has admitted so clearly that it is possible that Prigozhin was killed on purpose.
"It's clear that different versions are being considered, including the version of, you know what I mean, deliberate malice," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on August 30 when asked about the investigation.
Asked whether the International Civil Aviation Organization will investigate the plane's crash, Peskov said the circumstances make the investigation stand out, though he acknowledged that investigators have yet to formally conclude what exactly caused it to crash.
"Let's wait for the results of the Russian investigation," Peskov emphasized. The private Embraer plane in which Prigozhin was traveling from St. Petersburg to Moscow crashed north of the Russian capital, killing all 10 people on board on August 23.
The cause has not yet been found, but villagers near the scene told Reuters they heard a loud explosion and then saw the plane fall to the ground.
The plane crashed exactly two months after Prigozhin seized control of the southern Russian city of Rostov in late June, launching an uprising that shocked Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Russia has informed Brazilian authorities that it will not investigate the crash of the Brazilian-made Embraer plane, according to international rules "for now".
Asked about this, Peskov said: "First, the investigation has started, the Investigative Commission is engaged in this."
"In this case, there can be no question of any international aspect," said Peskov.
A day after the plane crash, Putin expressed his condolences to the families of those killed and said he had known Prigozhin for a very long time, since the early 1990s.
"He [Prigozhin] was an unlucky man, and he made serious mistakes in life," Putin said, while describing him as a talented businessman.
The Kremlin has dismissed suggestions by some Western politicians and commentators that Putin ordered the killing of Prigozhin in revenge, calling them "absolute lies".
The President of the United States, Joe Biden, said that he was not surprised by the death of Prigozhin and that there are few things in Russia that Putin is not behind./REL/
