The Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Valery Gerasimov, has warned that Russia will respond with appropriate measures if the United States decides to resume nuclear tests.
In a statement to the Russian state news agency Interfax, Gerasimov said that Washington has not yet responded to Russian proposals regarding the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START), the main agreement between the two countries aimed at limiting nuclear arsenals.
According to him, the uncertainty about the future of this treaty increases the risk of escalation. The current New START agreement expires on February 5 next year, while there are still no clear signals for an extension or a new agreement.
" If these tests are resumed by the American side, appropriate countermeasures will follow ," Gerasimov stressed, without providing concrete details on the nature of these actions.
