US President Donald Trump has brought the debate about a third presidential term back into focus, following a comment made during a reception at the White House.
Trump's latest media appearance was accompanied by a $250 million financial offer from one of his biggest donors, Miriam Adelson.
During a festive event for Hanukkah, where Adelson, the widow of Israeli-American billionaire Sheldon Adelson, was also present, Trump floated the idea of serving for another four years in the White House.
Although such an action would be unprecedented and widely considered unconstitutional, the declaration was enthusiastically received by those present, who began chanting "four more years."
Adelson, who donated more than $100 million to Trump's campaigns in the last election cycle, whispered to the president that he would give him another $250 million if he seriously considered a third run. Trump then turned to the audience and said, "She said, 'Think about it, I'll give you another $250 million.'"
Renowned lawyer Alan Dershowitz, who defended Trump during the impeachment process and has written a new book on the legal possibility of a third term, has acknowledged that the issue is not entirely clear from a theoretical point of view, but added that he does not believe Trump will actually run.
However, the 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution is clear: no person can be elected president more than twice. Trump himself has previously acknowledged that the Constitution does not allow him a third term, calling it "unfortunate."
