Affinity Partners, a company run by Jared Kushner, Donald Trump's son-in-law, has officially withdrawn from a luxury project in central Belgrade; a decision that is being interpreted as a strong blow to Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić.
The news was made public on December 15, the same day that the Serbian Organized Crime Prosecutor's Office filed an indictment against the Minister of Culture, Nikola Sellakovic, for violations during the process of removing the cultural monument status from the General Staff building.
Renowned foreign policy analyst Boško Jakšić told Serbian media that this withdrawal is a clear signal that Vučić has lost all points with Washington. “This is another failed attempt by Vučić to improve relations with the US,” he stressed. According to Jakšić, the company’s official explanation shows more than diplomacy; it is a clear rejection of the political climate in Serbia.
Jaksic even believes that ultimately, "Trump doesn't want to see Vucic in the eye anymore."
In a statement to Radio Free Europe, Kushner's company said: "Meaningful projects should unite, not divide. Out of respect for the Serbian people and the city of Belgrade, we are withdrawing from this project at this time." This stance reveals not only an economic but also a symbolic departure, which contradicts the Vučić regime's efforts to show international support.
The move by the American company is seen as a strategic failure for Vučić, who tried to use the project as a tool to strengthen his international image. Meanwhile, the involvement of a former minister in a criminal investigation further weighs on his standing in the eyes of foreign investors and international partners. Kushner's withdrawal could be just the beginning of a deeper cooling of relations between Belgrade and Washington.
