Zelensky said an end to the conflict in Ukraine is linked to security guarantees. But the close relationship between American negotiators and the Kremlin is fueling mistrust among Kiev's allies, who are meeting in Brussels today to decide the fate of frozen Russian assets.
Envoys from Moscow and Kiev will be in Miami this weekend to negotiate with the Americans, but no trilateral talks are planned.
But today in Brussels, European leaders are meeting with the Council, which has been called upon to decide on the use of frozen Russian assets to help Ukraine.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned that the choice is between giving "money today or blood tomorrow," reiterating fears that Moscow's ambitions could extend to Europe.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, however, called the Commission's proposal on the issue "stupid" and warned that "there is no consensus."
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Brussels said that "For Ukraine, a failure to decide on the assets would be very serious."
Zelensky said that the end of the conflict in Ukraine is linked to security guarantees.
The Ukrainian president has called bilateral security guarantees with the US, Europe and other countries a "compromise" for Ukraine's accession to NATO, Anadolu reports.
He recalled his country's early stance on joining the alliance as it provides the country with "real security guarantees," but said that some of Kiev's partners in the US and Europe do not support this path.
He said that Ukraine is now pursuing bilateral security guarantees with the US, namely “Article 5-like guarantees,” referring to Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, as well as guarantees from European and other countries, including Canada and Japan.
"These security guarantees for us are an opportunity to prevent another Russian aggression. And this is already a compromise on our part," Zelensky said.
The Ukrainian president's comments mark a major shift in Kiev's approach to NATO membership, which was set as a goal in Ukraine's Constitution after a parliamentary vote to introduce constitutional changes in 2019.
Russia has consistently expressed its opposition to Ukraine's accession to NATO.
New meetings in the USA
A meeting between Russian and American envoys on the war in Ukraine will take place this weekend in Miami, Florida, a White House official said. The White House has not provided details on the composition of the delegations. According to Politico, the United States will be represented by its envoy to Ukraine, Steve Witkoff, and President Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, while Russia is expected to send the Kremlin's economic envoy, Kirill Dmitriev.
The new round of talks comes after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky noted "progress" towards a compromise between Kiev and Washington on the content of a plan to propose to Moscow to end the fighting, following meetings in Berlin on Sunday and Monday between American, Ukrainian and European officials. Zelensky, however, warned that Russia is preparing for what he said was another "year of war" in 2026.
A new round of talks between Ukraine and the United States as part of peace negotiations will also take place tomorrow and Saturday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the news to reporters this morning, without giving details on the composition of the delegation.
"On Friday and Saturday, our team will be in the United States; they are already on the way and the Americans are waiting for them there. I don't know who else may be present; maybe there will be some Europeans," Zelensky said./ Pamphlet
