The European Union and Mexico have reacted with frustration to US President Donald Trump's threat to impose new 30% tariffs on their imports, starting August 1.
Mexico has called the move an “unfair deal” and stressed that its sovereignty is inviolable, giving a clear response to any attempt at foreign interference in its policies. On the other hand, Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, has threatened to take “proportionate countermeasures” if necessary, while both sides have stressed that they still want to continue negotiations with the US to find a solution.
In a letter to President von der Leyen, Trump criticized the European Union for its persistent trade deficit, writing that the US-EU trade relationship has been “far from reciprocity.” Trump stressed that this deficit is caused by trade barriers, both tariff and non-tariff, which the US considers a major problem.
In letters Trump has also sent to Mexico and the EU, he has warned that if any of the US's trading partners decide to retaliate, he will raise tariffs to 30% in retaliation. This behavior has caused great concern about the consequences this action could have on global trade and international relations.
Trump has also announced new tariffs on goods coming from Japan, South Korea, Canada and Brazil, stressing that these measures will take effect next month, increasing tensions in international trade.
