US Senator Jeanne Shaheen has called for the reinstatement of sanctions by the United States against the leader of Republika Srpska, Milorad Dodik, opposing the decision of President Donald Trump's administration to lift them.
Shaheen, a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, called the lifting of sanctions against Dodik last October a mistake. She argued that his political actions do not match the reasoning used by the US administration for this decision.
According to her, Dodik has consistently used separatist rhetoric and taken actions that undermine the integrity of the Dayton Peace Agreement. These actions, according to Shaheen, place him at odds with the institutional stability of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The senator also emphasized that Dodik's visit to Washington did not demonstrate a willingness to represent the interests of all citizens of the country, but focused on personal political objectives.
In this context, Shaheen urged the US administration to act to reinstate sanctions against Dodik, relying on the binding provisions included in the recent National Defense Authorization Act.
The United States initially imposed sanctions on Milorad Dodik in 2017, linking them to actions that were deemed a threat to the stability of Bosnia and Herzegovina and a violation of the Dayton Agreement.
