US demands Iran guarantee free navigation in Strait of Hormuz

Shortly after new attempts at negotiations in the conflict between the US and Iran, the situation in the Strait of Hormuz has escalated again: According to the US military, the US has struck targets in Iran after the Iranian navy attacked a container ship in this strategic strait.

The attacks are said to be in response to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards' attack on a Cyprus-flagged container ship in the Strait of Hormuz.

"A civilian crew member is missing, while the ship cannot continue sailing due to a fire on board and significant damage to the engine room," the US Central Command (CENTCOM), responsible for the region, announced on platform X.

According to the same announcement, the attacks were carried out on the orders of US President Donald Trump.

Iran closes the Strait of Hormuz

For its part, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard announced that the Strait of Hormuz, which is strategically important for supplies, would remain closed “until further notice.” According to the Guard, warning shots were fired at a ship that was sailing in an “unauthorized route.” According to the state news agency IRNA, the Revolutionary Guard said that the ship was hit and forced to stop.

Following this incident, the Strait of Hormuz was closed. "Closed  until further notice and until the end of American interventions in this region; no ships will be allowed to pass," the statement said.

The ceasefire is no longer valid.

This is the third wave of US attacks on Iran this week. After a framework agreement was reached between Washington and Tehran last month, a temporary relative calm had prevailed in the region. But on Wednesday night, the US resumed massive attacks on Iran. US President Donald Trump declared that the ceasefire agreed with Iran was no longer in effect. In response, Iranian armed forces again attacked US military bases in the region.

On Saturday (11.07.) there was talk that mediation efforts in the conflict between Iran and the United States were continuing. Official Washington, it was said, had agreed to continue the talks, wrote US President Donald Trump on his Truth Social platform. According to him, such a request had come from Iran. However, the US made it clear that the ceasefire is no longer in force. "We have been clear that the ceasefire is over," Trump stressed.

Iran rejected this version. According to Iranian state television, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei stressed that Tehran had not requested any kind of talks with the US. According to him, Iran had only accepted a visit by the mediator from Qatar.

According to media reports, the United States is demanding a clear commitment from Iran to free and safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. By Saturday, the Iranian leadership must publicly guarantee that this sea route will remain open and that Iran will refrain from attacks on commercial ships./ DW
