A recent United States military attack on a suspected drug trafficking vessel in the eastern Pacific Ocean has killed three people, according to a statement from the US Southern Command.
The operation is part of a broader campaign by the Trump administration, launched in September, aimed at targeting suspected drug-smuggling vessels in Latin American waters. According to international media, these interventions have caused at least 186 deaths so far and have also extended to the Caribbean Sea.
After Sunday's attack, the Southern Command posted a video on the social media platform X showing a boat speeding through the water before being hit by an explosion and engulfed in flames. US authorities have reiterated that the targets of these operations are suspected drug traffickers operating on known smuggling routes.
The attacks come as the US has significantly increased its military presence in the region, to its highest level in decades. The campaign began months before a major operation in January that led to the arrest of former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on drug trafficking charges.
